FAQs

Our most frequently asked questions about container trucking.

1. What is the difference between demurrage and detention?

Demurrage
The cost charged when import containers remain in port beyond the permitted free time. These charges encourage importers to get their containers out of port as soon as possible after arrival.

Detention
The charges levied when a container, after being taken out of port, is not returned to port within the permitted free time.
These costs are charged to ensure that containers are returned promptly so that they can be redeployed for other shipments.

Demurrage refers to delays within the port, while detention refers to delays that occur after the container leaves the port. Both charges are designed to promote the efficient flow and reuse of containers.

2. Who handles the formalities with shipping companies for container pickup?

Formalities with shipping companies for container pick-up are fully managed by our specialized import department. This department maintains daily communication with shipping companies to ensure that all necessary procedures and documentation are handled correctly and in a timely manner. This includes paying charges, managing container pick-up, handling customs documentation and ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.

3. Can any carrier pick up containers at the Port of Antwerp?

As of Jan. 15, 2024, PIN codes for container pickup will no longer be valid at most shipping companies. Instead, the container import process will be conducted through Certified Pick up (CPu).

To pick up a container, truck drivers will need the following:
- An appointment at the terminal
- An Alfapass
- A CPu registration
- Their fingerprint
